Instead of having the figure of Wise Men, this piece of decorative ceramic has the Chinese characters "Fu"-Luck, "Lu"-Prosperity, "Shou"-Longevity, meaning the same as the actual human figures.
God of Luck, "Fu", early legend recounts that it originated as a star and was believed to bring good fortune; his name literally means ‘lucky star’.
God of Prosperity, "Lu", the prosperity star was thought to govern a person’s success in a career.
God of longevity, "Shou", is the most popular of the three. The image of the God of Longevity is well known today: he is a benevolent old gentleman with a smiling face and a prominent forehead who holds a dragon-headed waling stick in one hand and the peach of immortality in the other.
Bats grouped together create the extremely auspicious and popular motif – longevity, wealth, health, love of virtue and natural death. |
